i've decided to look through the posts of what this time last year was like. A LOT of things have happened this year that i really wanted last year.
an example, october 30th i mentioned i had a dream i got tickets to see blink at leeds. this year that actually did happen.
i also mentioned on that post this year i'd get to see many other bands i love, and i did! my 2 other favourite bands, NOFX and bad religon.
also, last year my film coursework was tim burton study, and i mentioned various times how it would be a dream come true to meet him. unbelievable as it is, this year i did get to meet him.
basically, i just wish i could keep warning myself everything isn't that bad, especially if all of this good stuff happens. i dunno, i might have to do the daily thoughts again. i'd love to see all the good things that could happen next year that i wanted this year.

my week off
well, we had 'reading week' which was supposed to be a week when uni students read books that will help with their course or whatever. honestly, the closest thing to reading a book this week is a page of wes andersons college short story.
and catalogue's to decide what i want for christmas (although that has nothing to do with my course, but it was the only physical book that i've read).
it hasn't been very eventful at all.
instead of celebrating halloween by dressing up and going to town drinking, i decided to bake a cake dedicated to my favourite horror character, the frankenstein monster :)
hardly much of a dedication considering i just put green food colouring in that i bought from the co-op by tyne met months ago, but it was the closest thing it was going to be towards a dedication.
i think whenever i'm bored on days off, i plan to bake like that again. i like the idea of having a new hobby.
something else that happened this week is the price of the tickets for the green hornet premiere. a lot better than what i was prepared for it to be. plus, instead of waiting outside for hours like at the alice in wonderland premiere, i'll be inside with the cast and crew.
i like convincing myself that i'm going, because really, how could i say no to the chance of meeting seth rogen and michael gondry? they're in totally different leagues of the interest of film i have, yet they're both going to be there.
even if i don't go, it's really had me thinking about future premieres i could possibly attend.
speaking of the future, for college we had 2 essays to write, one of them being about what future career you'd like tv production wise. i didn't enjoy writing this essay, but it really did make me think about what i'll end up doing. i'd love to be working on films one day, and it just seems closer than i imagine, now that i have a mental idea of 2 roles i'd love. i just need to be prepared to move.
the other essay we had to write was about any film we liked. i decided to do about a new favourite i've already mentioned on here recently, the squid and the whale.
just writing about it, and studying about it with the extra features on the dvd has made me love it a lot more than i realised. i'm not surprised if i end up watching it again soon.
other things i've watched recently are mean creek, you don't mess with the zohan, the wedding singer, hot rod, i heart huckabee's, 40 year old virgin.
i also went to the cinema with liv to see 'easy a', which i'd been looking forward to seeing it since i saw the trailer before cyrus a few weeks back.
it seemed like such a girly film, i can't decide now if i like it as much as i did after i saw it, but it does seem like one of those guilty pleasure films.
i keep laughing at the idea of alex delarge being the head teacher of the high school in the film though.
and yesterday with liv we did the charity buckets at tesco.
it wasn't the most enjoyable time i've done the buckets, but it did go really fast. i think it was because of the system we put together for letting one of us sit for half an hour with the heavier bucket, and the other stand with the lighter bucket. obviously, i convinced liv to make me sit down longer than her! but it was a nice way of keeping track of the time.
the sky man was next to us, and he looked a mix between john barrowman and tom cruise. he kept trying to make conversation, but it was just weird.
me and liv were flabbergasted.
don't really know what else great happened this week. was a particularly boring half term.
oh and it's halloween. doing nothing. was going to have a film marathon of scary films, but i guess i'll put on something tim burton, then something scarier before i sleep. ugh i wish i had people who would celebrate with me or something, jeezessgbtgig.
let's hope there's reduced frankenstein cookies or something tomorrow :o

i feel like today i did something i don't want to forget, and i know blogging about it might suggest i will, but i feel like expressing it will probably imprint it in my mind more.
gosh, i'm making such a big deal about it, but i've never really been proud of myself for anything like this!
in college today, we were made to set up the tv studio as if we're going to do a live broadcast. the teacher allocated us roles, but he basically pointed to my group and said gallery stuff. i was worried about sorting out the cables, but i didn't even need to do that. we had 2 hours til we were going to do a transmission of a fake news bulletin to various places around the college.
i ended up being the vision mixer, which is the person who controls which camera shots are broadcast. i was so nervous doing it, but i felt like it was a real taste of the sort of work i'm aiming to end up in hopefully.
it was really quite scary thinking people were watching what i could control. i wasn't even watching to be honest.
once it was over with, the teacher individually summarized how well we did. he really praised me a lot for how well i did, in front of the class and when i was by myself. although i felt like maybe i'm getting too much praise for it, i didn't consider it was the first time i did that, and i really do put myself down too much.
what the bad part was, the teacher lied about it being broadcast around the college.
in a way i was gutted, it no longer felt as exciting and scary as it originally did.
basically doing that has made me look forward to doing more practical work at college. i'm really glad i've got a bit more confidence in something.

so 2 days ago (as i think i mentioned) i went to see the social network. i'd been looking forward to it for a while, the fact that i've previously enjoyed the work i've seen by david fincher (of course, who doesn't think fight club is a classic?), also being a facebook user, i was interested to see how it would be put onto screen.
i was impressed, and i really enjoyed it. i can understand why some people might not like it, but that doesn't apply to my opinion.
i'd heard before the story about how mark zuckerburg had stolen the idea of facebook, and i love how the film created drama from something that probably didn't make such a big deal as it did. i also remember hearing that zuckeburg created the website to get over his ex-girlfriend, and i like how she was involved throughout the whole film. i guess without her, there wouldn't have been an open ending.
i thought jesse eisenburg did a very good performance considering this is only the second film i've seen with him in. i would say he suited the role well, and i think he isn't as bad of an actor as some people are saying he is.
and then yesterday i saw the other guys.
i wasn't looking forward to this as much as the social network, but i still thought it would be worth seeing.
it was more enjoyable than i prepared. again, there was a shit audience and they didn't laugh at things that were funny. the atmosphere really does a lot to someone's experience.
will ferrell stole the film in my opinion, at least his character was the funniest. i found it really odd with mark wahlburg, just because you'd never imagine him in a comedy situation.
the ending was a huge let down. i was so bored during the last half.
i think i might enjoy it better the next time i watch it, which will probably be in a very long time.

i guess i haven't wrote a blog about how i've been lately. well that sounds like i'm ill or something, but i'd say i'm actually doing well.
today i found out one of my current teachers is leaving. i was shocked to hear. i've always had teachers leaving during the year, so i should've been more prepared for something like that to happen.
in high school, my form in particular, probably had the most form teachers out of any other class. the first one didn't even leave, she just replaced us. i'd say it's her fault!
then in tyne met, of course we never had a proper film teacher for a full year. and that sucks really, but at least i liked learning about film.
so yeah, it might be cool to have another new teacher. but from experience, it probably won't be that great.
i've been at newcastle for a month now, and i'm enjoying the course. i'm not surprised i'm not as comfortable in a group as everyone else seems to be, and i'm trying to change that. i am enjoying the practical lessons cause everything i'm learning is new, for instance, today we were setting up the broadcast cameras again and learning how to adjust the focus and brightness ect. it's so much different to how you would work a photography camera.
but i think i prefer the lessons where we can discuss film. we had to show a clip of any film to the class, and i chose one from everything is illuminated.
apparently we have to write an essay about it soon, and i'm quite looking forward to that!
other than college what have i been doing. hmm.
looking for a job. i know i have lots of student money i will have to pay back someday, but i'd much rather earn money that i'm not too scared to spend.
i went drinking for the first time in a while the other night with my sister. 3 bottles of wine, all different types each time. wasn't a good idea. i fucking hate chardonnay.
and considering i haven't blogged for a while, i was drinking the week before at my auntie and uncles anniversary party. i was more drunk than i realised, it's one of the first time i ever remember throwing up from alcohol.
but i suppose the night was good that i got to spend time with my family, and i got to speak to my cousin lisa, who i only ever remember speaking to properly on the phone when i was younger. also got on well with my younger cousins connor and megan, which sometimes can be surprising.
i'm going to the cinema with liv tomorrow night to see the social network. i'm excited, and lucky i found the tickets for free!
there was stuff i was going to say but i can't remember. oh well, another reason to blog on here if i remember. i dunno, i like blogging on here more when i've left it for a while, but it's a shame they all start the same.
okay i remember stuff now.
i bought some things with my student loan!
frank turner's poetry of the deed (which is an amazing album), zack and miri make a porno (turned out to be an okay film), a very big blue t-shirt (i still haven't worn it), a jumper with a cute heart on (worn it, plan to wear it tomorrow), and a scott pilgrim poster (on my bedroom wall now)
COOL.
i spent when i got home re-arranging all my posters. don't really like the order, but i made at least one wall that i'm happy with

i should add more photos. i haven't developed any of my germany/france/swiss photos, me and liv have been discussing to make a day of it soon, and i know we will.
okay i'll leave it here i feel like i need to do something else now. bye.

the squid and the whale

i'd been wanting to see this film for a while now, and a few days ago i found it online for £1.60 and free delivery, and figured why not. it arrived this morning, and i'd been excited all day to watch it. even the person who sold it to me put a post it note on recommending me to seek out the work by the writer david eggers (away we go, where the wild things are).
i regret having left it this long to actually take the time out to get the film, i enjoyed it very much. i love how the very first line of the film sums up the story, even though it's just about a game of tennis. i would say, in a nutshell, it's a story about trust, and how it can go wrong in both the long and short term. i found it very inspirational, especially after i discovered what "the squid and the whale" actually meant.
the only previous work that i've seen noah baumbach both write and direct was greenburg, and i can identify the style he presents, especially in the characters. seeing this has really encouraged me to try and watch the rest of his work! i feel he may be underrated in comparison to wes anderson who he's worked with a couple of times.
this isn't really much of a review, and i don't want to ramble on too much about it, i just feel like i haven't watched a new film this good in a while. well, new as in something i picked out that may not be as recent. i haven't watched any dvds in a couple of weeks now, and i think this may have been the film to encourage me to do so.
